Walks around Windermere

We’ve just written some walks around Windermere that are available to our guests to enjoy a lazy stroll around the town of Windermere- catching up with its history, following a beck from its source to the Lake Windermere or just wonder as you wander.

A walk that takes you into the past- ancient and not so ancient. Windermere has an old grammar school and now private houses but you can imagine the boys strolling from their college on Old College lane to St  Mary’s church.

The houses, in an ecclesiastical Gothic style- that were built around College Lane were built by a local wealthy merchant in the 19th century wanting to develop the area similar to Cambridge

Then there’s the pre historic clan and the remnants and where they worshipped and met

or where they started to cut into the rock to begin the extension of the railway from Windermere to Ambleside that included a viaduct across the Troutbeck valley. It was never started

Or we have a walk that takes you down shaded woods and quiet country lanes

A wander along the shores of Lake Windermere, past fast running becks and watch the sunset and walk past running becks and then sit and watch the sun set over the Lake Windermere
