Where to eat in the Lake District

Where to eat in the Lake District

As a luxury bed and breakfast in the Lake District, many of our guests are people who appreciate good food served in a warm relaxed ambience, helpful and informative staff but with excellent and creative chefs.

But they sometimes go away disappointed as they didn’t ask us of the place where to go (or not)

Here are three top notch places- two in Windermere and one in Ambleside where we have eaten several times- but for all you need to book in advance as word has got round

Restaurant in Windermere
Duck with wild berry jus at Cedar Manor

Cedar Manor run by Caroline and Jonathan, has had a first rate reputation for food winning many awards since we’ve been here which is over 10 years. Roger, their chef, serves excellent modern British cuisine that is simple very tasty using local produce. How about for starters, Chilled Cucumber and Horseradish Gazpacho with crab salad and pickled white radish followed by Milanese Chicken wilted spinach, braised fennel, herb pesto, confit tomatoes and French fries. For pudding well… has to be Apple Doughnuts with cider ice cream, apple caramel, vanilla Anglaise

Great food at Francines in Windermere

In Windermere itself Francines, like Cedar Manor, has been serving satisfied customers since we’ve been here. Graham is a great chef and a great sense of humour. They serve amazing fish dishes- ask Mary about their fish casserole- as well as various choices of game dishes. You can even take your dog with you.

Orkney scallops at Lakes Road Kitchen

The Lakes Road Kitchen in Ambleside has a growing reputation and can’t be far off getting a Michelin award for their chef/owner James Cross. Their menu choices range from Iceland Sea Urchin, English Truffles, 50 day aged Herdwick lamb and aged steak

They take their inspiration for Northern Europe and James worked at Norma for 2 years
